STATUS Design Proposal The Nairobi Rivers Regeneration project is an urban initiative by PLANNING. The Nairobi Rivers Regeneration initiative outlines a vision for the physical regeneration of the urban river corridors. By unlocking the potential of river fronting properties and land city-wide renewal is possible.
This includes providing land for lower income and affordable housing providing public open and recreational space improving urban mobility and promoting mixed-use mixed income developments giving public access to the rehabilitated river corridors. Riverfront properties as well as properties in proximity to the river corridors will benefit from this rapid increase in land value. PLANNING has successfully secured grant funding from the British Government (2018) the Government of Norway (2019) and the Government of France (2020) to undertake a pre-feasibility study map river pollution and in parallel identify high impact sites and to develop a first phase river regeneration masterplan for Nairobi River.
Parallel to the masterplan a development framework will guide and facilitate river related development. A number of pilot projects will showcase the environmental social and economic benefit of addressing the heavily polluted rivers in a holistic and inclusive manner. The citizens of Nairobi can create a place where they will want to be.
